Volunteer

Staff and volunteers working our Oktoberfest event.

What makes for an outstanding volunteer?

  • Desire to seek new knowledge and to share it with visitors
  • Communication skills necessary to interact with visitor of all ages
  • Dependability
  • Physical ability to climb stairs
  • Commitment to preservation

But I don’t know enough …

Orientation sessions and training materials are supplied to all volunteers; the museum has numerous reference books to supplement these materials. Volunteers may begin at any time during the open season, April through December.

When do I work and what exactly do I do?

Volunteers normally contribute one day every week or every other week to the museum. Other schedules can be accommodated. They not only provide guided tours to the public and for pre-arranged groups of visitors, but they also work to help produce the special programs and events throughout the year – making Christmas tree decorations, serving refreshments, story-telling, preparing materials for children’s programs, baking …… many talents from the many volunteers is what makes our offerings successful and special.

I’m interested; what should I do now?

Contact the museum at 757-623-9814 and ask for a docent/volunteer application.
